Recipe : Panagam

My childhood summer holidays usually ended with a trip to Paganeri (near Sivagangai) for the village God’s yearly festival. The festival takes place for 10 days with the final day of therottam. The sweltering heat of the summer was smacked down with cool and refreshing drinks – Panagam and Neer mor.

Panagam is an easy to make, delicious and a very healthy drink. It combines iron and also has vitamin C which makes the absorption of iron easier by your body.

Jaggeri/Karupatti – 250 g
Lemons – 4 (medium sized)

Cardomom Powder (Elaikkai) – 1/2 tsp

Dry Ginger Powder (sukku) – 1 tsp

  1. Shave the Jaggery to get a powdery form and dissolve them in the water.
  2. Filter this liquid to remove impurities.
  3. Add the powdered cardamom and dry ginger to this. (I hand powdered the fresh ones. You can use the pre powdered items too)
  4. Finally squeeze the juice of the lemons and add them too.

Ta Da. It’s over in a jiffy. Drink it as such or chilled. It has a earthy, refreshing aroma and it’s free of sugar too. Add karupatti instead of jaggery for an extra iron boost.
